The 4th WIPO Summer School Kicks Off in Kazakhstan

16 June, 2025

On June 16, 2025, the official opening of the Summer School of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) took place in Kazakhstan. This landmark event gathers young professionals, students, researchers, and practitioners in the field of intellectual property. Since its launch in 2022, the project has offered participants a unique opportunity for education and knowledge exchange.
The opening ceremony featured a welcome address by Sholpan Abdreyeva, Chairman of the Committee on Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan. She emphasized that Kazakhstan has become a hub for those seeking to study and advance intellectual property for the fourth consecutive year.
“Together with the WIPO Academy, we are creating a space where knowledge, experience, and innovation come together to shape a new generation of professionals in this important field,” noted Sholpan Abdreyeva.
On behalf of WIPO, Ilya Gribkov, Head of the Division for the Caucasus, Central Asia and Eastern Europe of the Department of Countries in Transition and Developed Countries, welcomed the Summer School participants. In his remarks, he highlighted Kazakhstan’s active efforts in promoting awareness of intellectual property law. These include not only hosting the WIPO Summer School in Astana but also the launch of a new master’s program in 2024 on “Intellectual Property and Business Law” at Maqsut Narikbayev University.
Professor Tolesh Kaudyrov, Doctor of Law, opened the first day of the Summer School with a lecture titled “Intellectual Property Law: General Provisions.” His presentation immediately captured the audience’s attention with in-depth analysis and practical examples, sparking a lively discussion among students. This strong opening underscored the relevance of the topic and laid the foundation for a productive learning experience.
Kazakhstan remains the only country in Central Asia to host a WIPO Summer School. In 2025, similar programs are being held in 16 other countries, including the United Kingdom, Spain, China, the United States, and Switzerland. Lecturers from leading international organizations, patent attorneys, business representatives, innovators, scholars, and experts from Qazpatent are sharing knowledge, experience, and best practices.
From 2022 to 2024, the WIPO Summer School in Kazakhstan trained 150 graduates from 7 countries. In 2025, the program brings together 30 participants, including representatives from foreign countries such as Uzbekistan and France.
