The WIPO-Kazakhstan Summer School is open in Astana

Today, June 18, 2024, the opening of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Summer School took place at QAZPATENT.

The WIPO Summer School is a two-week intensive interdisciplinary program in intellectual property law organized by WIPO in collaboration with QAZPATENT for university students and young professionals.

At the opening ceremony, the Vice Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan Botagoz ZHAKSELEKOVA delivered a welcoming speech, noting the high significance of the event. She emphasized that the WIPO Summer School is being held in the Republic of Kazakhstan for the third time, which indicates the development of intellectual property educational initiatives in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

“The WIPO Summer School in Kazakhstan already has its own history. In 2022, the first training was successfully completed by trainees from Bulgaria, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Last year the WIPO-Kazakhstan Summer School was held in Almaty at the International University of Information Technologies. This year we welcome students from various cities of Kazakhstan, as well as from Belarus, Moldova, and the Russian Federation. It emphasizes the growing interest in the WIPO-Kazakhstan Summer School,” noted Botagoz Zhakselekova.

On behalf of the WIPO, the participants were greeted by Ilya GRIBKOV, head, Section for Caucasian, Central Asian and Eastern European Countries, Division for Transition and Developed Countries, WIPO. He emphasized that the Summer School is one of the forms of the WIPO’s assistance in developing human resources in the field of intellectual property, which allows to gain knowledge about the use of IP as a tool for economic, social, cultural and technological development, as well as the role of WIPO in the global intellectual property system. Also Ilya GRIBKOV emphasized that the Republic of Kazakhstan is taking active steps in disseminating knowledge about intellectual property, as evidenced by the holding of the WIPO Summer School and by the WIPO’s first graduate program in the Central Asian Region to be delivered in collaboration with the Government of Kazakhstan and Maqsut Narikbayev University.

QAZPATENT Director Yerbol OSPANOV represented the National Institute of Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan noting that the program of the WIPO-Kazakhstan Summer School includes group discussions, workshops and case studies based on the real practice of the Kazakh IP office.

Marina SIROTINA, Deputy Director of the Department of Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan, informed the audience about the state policy in the field of intellectual property.

The WIPO-Kazakhstan Summer School will be held in Astana from June 18 to 28, 2024. The program covers all the main aspects of intellectual property law, including the protection of copyright and related rights, trademarks, inventions, management of intangible assets, licensing, technology transfer, protection of violated rights. In addition, the program includes such current issues as patenting medicines, innovations for green technologies, franchising trends, abuse of exclusive rights, generative artificial intelligence and intellectual property.

The WIPO-Kazakhstan Summer School is taught by IP experts from WIPO, QAZPATENT, the Eurasian Patent Office, IP professors, and professionals in the field from the public and private sectors. A certificate of participation in the WIPO Academy Summer School will be received to students who successfully completed the summer school's program requirements.

It should be noted that the Republic of Kazakhstan is the only country in Central Asia that hosts the WIPO Summer School. In 2024, WIPO Summer Schools are delivered in seventeen countries, including China, Korea, Singapore, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and USA.

A total of 100 students are trained in the framework of the WIPO-Kazakhstan Summer School in 2022 and 2023. In 2024, 50 participants are registered, including trainees from foreign countries.
