The first meeting of the Working Group of Experts on Intellectual Property of Central Asia and the United States took place on September 17-18, 2019 in Almaty, organized by the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the US Department of Commerce in coordination with the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), Bureau of US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), United States Department of Commerce International Trade Administration (DOC / ITA).
The meeting was attended by government delegations, as well as representatives of patent offices of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and the United States.
Representatives of Kazakhstan: acting Director of the Department of Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan Y.Kuantyrov, Head of the Research and Analytical Work Department of the National Institute of Intellectual Property A.Almassova, Expert of the Industrial Property Department of the Department of Intellectual Property Rights of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan R. Kokzhalov.
Representatives of the United States: Michael Cofield, Advisor to the Commercial Law Development Program, Julia Melara, Specialist in International Programs of the Commercial Law Development Program, Advisor to the Texas Regional Office of the Department of Politics and International Relations of the United States Patent and Trademark Office J. Todd Reeves, Director of the Bureau of Innovation and Intellectual Property of the US Trade Representation Anjam Aziz, Deputy Assistant to the US Trade Representation Zeba Reyazuddin, Specialist at the Office of US International Trade Rachel Salzman.
Agenda: Special 301 report on countries in Central Asia, the use of unlicensed software, the problems of copyright and the fight against counterfeiting and issues concerning measures taken by countries in the field of protection and enforcement of intellectual property rights in the region.
Based on the results of the two-day discussions on September 19, 2019, bilateral meetings of US representatives with country delegates were held, during which the results of the meeting were summarized and questions for the further work of the Working Group on Intellectual Property of Central Asia and the USA were outlined.
