Kazakh Minister of Justice Azamat Eskarayev met with EU Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski

30 May, 2024

The reason for this meeting was the negotiations between Kazakhstan and the European Union on the conclusion of a protocol on the protection of geographical indications for agricultural products and food, wine and spirits, held in 2015 to implement the agreement between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the European Union on expanded partnership and cooperation.
"Kazakhstan has great potential in the development of geographical indications, and therefore we are interested in signing this protocol. This will help to increase the exports of our agricultural producers and their entry into the European Union market," Azamat Eskarayev said.
For their part, representatives of the European Union highly appreciated the cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and noted the effectiveness of negotiations on the draft protocol.
Geographical regulations are a new object of intellectual property for Kazakhstan, introduced into legislation in 2022.
Today, Kazakhstan protects national geographic landmarks such as the Almaty airport, Turkestan ice cream, Turkestan chocolate, Karaganda ice cream and Sairam cupcake. Georgian chacha is protected from foreign geographical indications.
Work is underway to register geographical indications for the Aral soap "Zhantachnoye", Kyzylorda salt, Kyzylorda rice, Aral camel milk soap, Narynkol potatoes, Talgar pear, etc.
Previously, geographical indications were registered in Kazakhstan only as the origin of goods. So, it should be noted that among them are Czech Budweiser beer, cheese Parmesan and European Gorgonzolla agricultural products, Prosecco wine, etc. The origin of these goods is registered in the names of European manufacturers.
Further dissemination in Kazakhstan of such an object of intellectual property as geographical regulations will contribute to the development of national branding of agricultural products produced in various regions of Kazakhstan, increase their recognition on the world market, investment attractiveness and development of the tourism industry.
