On November 8, 2019, a seminar called “Inventing the Future. Biotechnology and Patents” was held at the National Center for Biotechnology.
The event began with a welcoming speech by Kassym Mukanov, Deputy Director General of the National Center for Biotechnology, and Guldana Ilyassova, Head of the Department of Inventions, Utility Models, and Selection Achievements of NIIP. In turn, Kassym Mukanov emphasized the importance of patent protection for innovative biotechnological and breeding developments to stimulate the country's economic development. Participants of the seminar, patent examiner in the field of biotechnology Damir Temirgaliyev spoke about promising areas for the development of biotechnological innovations, focusing on the features of depositing strains of microorganisms when filing an application in the Republic of Kazakhstan. Patent examiner on foreign patenting Lyazzat Tutesheva gave an overview of the PCT system, and also spoke about the procedure for compiling, filing and considering an international application. In addition, Adilkhan Urombayev, a patent examiner in the field of selection achievements, cited foreign experience in patenting selection achievements and examples of successfully commercialized selection achievements of Kazakhstan inventors. For example: the only breed of Kazakhstani selection with marbled meat is Auliekol breed; a breed of sheep with high quality merino wool - Etti merino; Kazakh horses of the Jabe type. After the seminar, Deputy General Director of the National Center for Biotechnology Kassym Mukanov and the Head of the Laboratory of Stem Cells Vyacheslav Ogay conducted an excursion to the laboratories of the National Research Center for Nuclear Research at the laboratories of the National Center for Biotechnology, where scientists presented their research and projects in the field of regenerative medicine, agricultural biotechnology, genomics. Following the seminar, employees of the National Center for Biotechnology noted the importance of the seminar on the protection of intellectual property, and expressed gratitude to the NIIP team for the informative presentation of the speakers, contributing to the increase of professional knowledge of specialists.
