Members of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan discussed issues of promoting national branding in Kazpatent

An off-site meeting of the Working Group of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan on the Draft Law "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Improving Legislation in the Field of Intellectual Property" (Draft Law) took place at the National Institute of Intellectual Property of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan (Kazpatent) on February 24, 2021.

The main topic of the meeting of members, experts and other interested parties was the proposed novelty in civil legislation, namely the introduction of a new IP object "Geographical Indications" (GI).

On behalf of the Ministry of Justice the meeting was opened by the Vice Minister of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan Akerke Akhmetova. During the meeting, issues of international practice of GI protection and appellations of origin, as well as experience of working with appellations of origin in the Republic of Kazakhstan were highlighted. Patent attorneys and representatives of public associations supported the initiative of the members and noted the importance of registering GI as one of the branding strategy elements for domestic products.

During the excursion, Director Yerbol Ospanov made a brief introduction to the Kazpatent’s activity, focused on statistics and introduced the members to the organization's experts.

At the end of the meeting, the participants expressed confidence that the introduction of GI as an object will generally have a positive effect on IP system of the republic, and will also increase the recognition level of domestic products in the world and tourism.
