Members of the Committee on Constitutional Legislation, Judicial System and Law Enforcement Agencies met with the leadership of the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the National Institute of Intellectual Property (Kazpatent) to discuss the protection of IP rights on April 29, 2021.

The meeting was opened with a welcoming speech by the Secretary of the Committee Kanatbek Safinov. He noted that a group of parliamentary members (including senators S. Aitpayeva, V. Volkov) initiated a draft law "On Amendments and Additions to Certain Legislative Acts of the Republic of Kazakhstan on Improving Legislation in the Field of Intellectual Property", which is under consideration in the Mazhilis.

Vice Minister of Justice Akerke Akhmetova made a presentation on the planned reforms in IP legislation and noted that the draft law on IP issues provides for amendments and changes to increase the transparency and efficiency of collective management organizations; the introduction of Geographical Indication as a new IP object; short-term protection of unregistered industrial designs; regulation of the activities of patent attorneys.

Director of Kazpatent Yerbol Ospanov thanked the members of the Senate for their interest in the field of intellectual property and made a brief overview of Kazpatent's activities.

Senators discussed the issues of improving legislation in the field of intellectual property.

They noted the timeliness of the amendments stipulated by the draft law and initiated by the senators regarding the introduction of such an intellectual property object as "Geographical Indication", as well as shortening the procedure for IP registering and improving the activities of patent attorneys.
