National Institute of Intellectual Property
On May 30, 2025, Maqsut Narikbayev University (MNU) hosted a roundtable discussion titled “Education in the Field of Intellectual Property: Opportunities and Prospects.” The event was held ahead of the first graduation of master’s students specializing in Intellectual Property and Business Law and served as a logical continuation of the panel session organized by the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan during the Astana International Forum.
The discussion brought together LL.M students, representatives of government agencies, international organizations, the academic community, and Qazpatent.
MNU Provost Sergey Pen moderated the session, posing key questions and guiding the discussion toward the current challenges and future prospects in training professionals in the field of intellectual property. One of the keynote speakers was Habip Asan, Director of the Department for Transition and Developed Countries at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The central topic was the development of MNU’s unique master’s program, created in collaboration with WIPO, the Ministry of Justice, and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Kazakhstan. The program has already proven its effectiveness: five Qazpatent employees successfully completed the first cohort, strengthening the agency’s human resources capacity.
It is worth noting that similar joint master’s programs with WIPO are also being implemented in Argentina, Bulgaria, Zimbabwe, India, Spain, Italy, Cameroon, China, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Tunisia, Turkey, and South Korea.
