Qazpatent issued the 10000th patent for a utility model: reaching a new milestone and strengthening the innovative potential of Kazakhstan

27 December, 2024

The 10000th patent was issued for a utility model, the owner of which is the Zhalyn Scientific Production and Technical Center Limited Liability Partnership. The name of the utility model is "Method for Obtaining Serum for the Treatment and Prevention of Diarrhea in Newborn Calves". The method is aimed at solving a pressing problem in the field of veterinary medicine, which confirms the high standards of Kazakhstani scientists and engineers.

Reaching the 10000 patent mark for utility models is an important indicator of the successful development of intellectual property in Kazakhstan. This achievement is particularly significant in the context of the Global Innovation Index (GII), where it is considered one of Kazakhstan's three strongest indicators in the global innovation sphere. According to the GII-2024, Kazakhstan ranked 10th in terms of "Number of utility model applications filed at the national patent office (per billion PPP$ GDP)", which underlines the high level of inventive activity and the introduction of innovative technologies into the economy (data for 2023).

Utility models, often referred to as "short-term patents", play a key role in stimulating incremental innovation. Over the years, utility models have served as an effective tool for protecting inventions in various industries, including mechanical engineering, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and green technologies.

Reaching this milestone is a testament to Kazakhstan’s commitment to becoming a regional leader in innovation and technology. Meanwhile, the bulk of utility model patents in Kazakhstan are related to areas that directly support key Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Energy and Renewable Energy (SDGs 7 and 13): A significant number of patents are devoted to developments aimed at improving energy efficiency and the use of renewable resources.
  • Agribusiness (SDG 2): A number of patents focus on innovations in water management and improving the sustainability of agricultural crops.
  • Healthcare and Biotechnology (SDG 3): There is an increase in the number of patents in the field of pharmaceuticals, medical equipment and biotechnology.
  • Industry and Infrastructure (SDG 9): Engineering solutions aimed at creating more efficient production processes and improving infrastructure are an important focus of patent activity.
