In the global economy, patents play a key role in ensuring the competitiveness of countries, contributing to attracting investments and developing high-tech industries. Kazakhstan, aiming to secure a prominent position in the global scientific community, is actively developing its patent system, supporting scientists and inventors in their pursuit of creating new technologies and products.
Inventions occupy an important place in the total number of patent applications filed. In 2022, 838 patent applications for inventions were submitted, and in 2023, this number grew to 917, representing a 9,4% increase. In the first half of 2024, there was also a significant increase in the number of applications to 559, which is 24,8% more compared to the same period in 2023.
The number of patents granted in the first half of 2024 increased to 277, which is 11,7% more compared to the same period in 2023.
International patenting through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) system is becoming increasingly popular among Kazakhstani inventors. In 2023, 26 PCT applications were submitted, which is 83% more than in 2022. In the first half of 2024, the number of applications filed through QAZPATENT under the PCT procedure increased to 18, which is 38,5% more than the previous year, indicating a growing interest of Kazakhstani scientists and companies in the international protection of their inventions.
The share of patents on inventions in this statistics relates to the three main areas: Medicine and Biotechnology: about 35% of all patents are related to the development of new treatment methods, medical devices, and pharmaceutical drugs. Energy and Ecology: approximately 25% of patents concern technologies aimed at improving the environmental situation, enhancing energy efficiency, and developing alternative energy sources. Information Technology and Robotics: around 20% of patents include developments in IT, automation, and robotics.
The leading region in terms of the activity of filing patent applications for inventions is Almaty city, the largest innovation center, where over 30% of all patents are registered. This is due to the presence of major research institutes and universities. The second most active region is Astana, the capital, and the second most important region, accounting for about 25% of patents. The top three is rounded out by the Pavlodar and Karaganda regions, a region with a strong industrial base, where about 20% of patents are registered, mainly in metallurgy and materials science.
An analysis of current trends allows for the prediction of further growth in the number of applications filed and patents granted in Kazakhstan. In the future, an increase in the number of international applications can be expected, which will be possible due to the improvement of mechanisms for supporting inventors and the enhancement of the patent system.
